Korean Skincare for Dark Spots: Which Active Is Right for Your Skin?
Dark spots after blemishes, sun spots, a dull complexion: Korean skincare has five actives for that, and each one suits a different skin. So instead of a ranking, here is a short guide: 12 products from our range, sorted by active. One thing first, because it appears in every set of instructions: sun protection during the day. Without SPF, the spots come back. Which sunscreen feels light is shown in our guide Korean Sunscreen.
The five actives in one sentence each
- Vitamin C brightens and protects as an antioxidant. Pure ascorbic acid is strong and can tingle, derivatives are milder.
- Niacinamide evens out skin tone, refines pores and regulates sebum. Well tolerated.
- Tranexamic acid (TXA) targets dark spots and acne marks, usually combined with niacinamide.
- Alpha arbutin gently softens hyperpigmentation, even on sensitive skin.
- Glutathione is an antioxidant for glow and an even complexion.

The short version
- Sensitive skin: Beauty of Joseon Light On Serum, Dr. Althea Vitamin C Boosting Serum or Beauty of Joseon Glow Deep Serum
- Blemish-prone skin with acne marks: COSRX The Niacinamide 15 Serum or Anua Niacinamide 10% + TXA 4% Serum
- Dull complexion without spots: Anua Peach 70% Niacin Serum or APLB Glutathione Niacinamide Ampoule Serum
- Stubborn, older spots: COSRX The Vitamin C 23 Serum or SKIN1004 Tone Brightening Capsule Ampoule
How to combine the actives
In the morning vitamin C, then cream, then sun protection. In the evening tranexamic acid, alpha arbutin or niacinamide. Niacinamide gets along with everything. Do not use pure ascorbic acid in the same step as acid exfoliators or retinol. And patience: dark spots need several weeks of regular use, so do not keep switching products.
Frequently asked questions
Vitamin C or niacinamide: which is better against dark spots?
For blemish-prone skin with blemish marks, niacinamide is the easier start, for dull skin with sun spots, vitamin C. Many formulas combine both, for example PURITO or Dr. Althea.
What helps against blemish marks?
Niacinamide plus tranexamic acid: Anua Niacinamide 10% + TXA 4% or the SKIN1004 Tone Brightening Capsule Ampoule. If new blemishes are forming at the same time, our Blemish Marks & Dark Spots Routine helps.
Why does vitamin C tingle?
Pure ascorbic acid in a high concentration can tingle briefly, and according to COSRX that is normal at 23 %. If it burns or the skin turns red, use a derivative like the one in the Beauty of Joseon Light On Serum.
